Kongsberg: Rising star Aurora is sitting backstage before her jazz festival concert, eating strawberries. She's easily recognised by her characteristic blonde bob cut. Last year she did a show at Union Scene and this year Drammen will be able to see her again at the Elvefestivalen.
Collects moths
Drammens Tidende has brought along a little gift for the 20 year old, in an empty box of walnuts.
- Oh, a moth, she exudes enthusiastically when she sees the dead insect.
As it turns out the girl from Os in Hordaland is a collector of dead moths. She's not quite sure why she likes them so much.
- I just find all butterflies so beautiful. I always see moths at night at my place. They try to get a close as possible to the outside lamps. That's very nice, somewhat symbolic. The way they crash into the lamp all the time. I don't know if that hurts them, but they keep on doing it. They try to get into the warmth of the light. And then they're very hairy, which is nice. I like their colours even if they're almost camouflaged on their wings, she says, looking lovingly into the little box.
She can't understand why people are afraid of insects.
- They're very small, maybe that's why we're afraid of them? Fear of them laying their eggs inside our brains and stuff? A bit like we do with people: When one person from a particular country of religion does something, then we think all of them do it. We have a certain fear. It's the same with spiders. When one of them is poisonous, then we think all of them are, she reflects.
She follows us to the back of the house.
- Do you like sitting on the ground, she asks, seeking out a place in the shade for herself.
Creates "dark art-pop"
Things have been quite hectic for the young west coast girl since she started her career as an artist with her single "Puppet" in 2012. She's been on Jimmy Fallon's talk show, done the Nobel Peace Prize concert and been awarded a prize for "Best Newcomer" at the Norwegian Grammy Awards. And she's been lauded on Twitter by mega star Katy Perry.
Now she's looking forward to this night's performance at the jazz festival, and the Elvefestivalen in August.
Despite Aurora's easy-going personality, her lyrics are often dark. She calls her genre "dark art-pop". She tells us that her lyrics often come from outside, but also sometimes from inside.
- I'm a very happy person even if I cry a lot, she says.
She also writes lyrics about being frightened, even if she feels she's less frightened than she ought to be.
- I guess it just goes to show that I'm not quite grown up yet. But I fear people and fans get disappointed when they meet me. I think they're disappointed because I'm not good enough. And that I'm too short, she says laughing.
- Is that why you wear high shoes?
- No, I just love clumpy shoes. I like the feeling of something heavy on my feet, else I would've just flown away. I'd just disappear into the universe without my clumpy shoes, she says in her characteristic dreamy way.
Wants a travel cat
Aurora is easily distracted and often changes her mind in the middle of sentences. It's as if she just says what's on her mind just like that.
- It's because....Oh, see that bubble, she says enthusiastically, pointing into the air.
- Did you see it, it just flew behind those threes.
It's hard to imagine such a dreamy person at the same time having her feet firmly planted to the ground. It's difficult, at least till you meet Aurora. But maybe that's how you get when you need clumpy shoes to keep your from disappearing into the universe. And if you love doing cartwheels.
- I don't have enough space. Space to do cartwheels. In Norway you can do that almost everywhere. But a lot of places in the US you don't have enough space to do them. That's strange.
Just like that Aurora tells us she would like to have a travel cat. A cat that contains wishes.
- You just have to find a cat where, if it looses a hair, you can wish for something. There are apples containing wishes as well. But you need to find the right ones. And you'll have to eat the apple before you can make a wish. But I'd love to have a cat like that. And I'm going to name him Obi-Wan, or just Kenobi. I love Star Wars too. I love everything related to Fantasy, she says stroking one of her braids against her mouth.
- I talk to myself a lot
One of the reasons she loves Fantasy is because she can escape into a different world.
- I very much feel that I am myself, the Aurora I used to be before I was together with lots of people doing a lot of travelling and all that stuff, she explains.
- And I talk to myself a lot. Then it's easier to imagine that you have an invisible person with you. That way you at least talk to someone, which is a bit better than talking to yourself. You get answers when you talk to invisible persons, but you always know what's the answer's going to be. Because you make it yourself. But it's quiet satisfying pretending that the answer's from another person, she continues.
And the invisible person that Aurora likes to talk with the most is the English-speaking boy Alk.
- He's been there since I was little, he's been with me for a long time. He never gets older. I think he's eleven, she says after some thinking.
And even if Aurora has become a star in a very short time it's nothing that she reflects about much.
- I take one day at a time, trying to make sure I'm a person it's nice to be around. It's important that the people I travel with are feeling fine and that I'm being myself. If one day I'm not, I have to do something.
And if you ask Aurora how many albums she's sold, she has no clue.
- I don't think about that much and I think that's important. I'm just myself, after all.
