Interview with Aurora – “We should all stand up for each other”
Lifeonstage met Aurora before her show for a little interview in Munich and talked with her about the magic of different cities, healing through music, storms at heart and about her second album.
You are playing a big tour in Germany at the moment and you will play at many festivals all around the world in summer, what are you most looking forward to, and why?
Aurora Aksnes: In general I am very excited about being in studio and making new songs at the moment. When I am on tour it is very nice to get to know all this different places. At least you sometimes have some hours off, so you can see different cities. I love to find small areas of nature, I love to find a park in every city. Then I sit down, maybe take a walk and just feel the vanity of the city. I also like to talk to people and get to know them. I really like to get the smell of the city. It is much fun but also exhausting to be on tour, of course more fun. The audience gives lots of love and they are very different in every city. It is nice to have variation, if you play a show every day.
You said you love being in studio at the moment, so are you working on a new album?
Aurora Aksnes: Oh yes. When I am alone, I am writing these sad and creepy songs. I have written almost 40 songs until now, but I had to choose some songs, being on the album. Then I tried to write some with the bandmates, so we can make something happier. I always need to write with friends to write something more cheerful, so they can tell me when it is too sad. It is important to have some joy in the album, as well. I do ott want to make people depressed. I want to have all the emotions on an album. It feels strange when the album is new to everyone but old to me. So I am very excited to release more music because that is most fun.
In an older interview you said that you have some problems with the speech between your songs. Is it also difficult for you to find the right words for your lyrics, or is this different?
Aurora Aksnes: It is very strange because when I sing everything flows on my lips much easier. It is like in trance. I just do it without knowing, that I am singing or writing. It just happens. It feels very magical, a bit like dreaming. It is just happening and then you realize that you are on stage after you have done singing. It is kind of scary to talk to people. You see it at school when you have to do presentations. Talking is a scary thing. When I get nervous I say lots of strange things. But I am working on it.
You said that you are creating music for your own. Then your mother told you it would be selfish not to share it because it can help other people. How can music help people?
Aurora Aksnes: People are very complicated creatures. We feel so many things and we get attached to other people and to places and to things. Nothing lasts forever. We will all experience the feeling of loss or disappointment, being left outside and having no friends. We all experience things in life, which can be really tough. I think one of the worst ability of humans is that we cannot talk about emotions. If you ask a friend “Are you fine?” your friend will most likely say, “I am fine, there is nothing” but you can see that something is wrong. That is why music is so important because there are so many people who are afraid to talk and maybe do not have anyone to talk to. If you have a song that can talk to you it can be kind of a friend. Music is such a beautiful thing, especially for me because I am not good at talking but I can write about it in music. I think music can help us a lot because we need to cry sometimes. It is very healthy to cry sometimes.
You have a song called “My Heart Is A Storm”. In which situations is your heart a storm? Is this more a positive or a negative feeling?
Aurora Aksnes: I have forgotten about that song but I like that song. I should put it on the second album. I think my heart is very often in a storm. I am a tiny person and I feel many things. I am not afraid to feel because I love myself to cry and to be angry for a little while if there is any trouble in me. I like to put it in music, in painting or in yoga. I am very emotional and I cry a lot, I am scared and I think, I laugh and I am angry, so I like to feel so many things. And I often have the feeling that my heart is a storm, it can be in many ways. If you are in love, when you have butterflies in your belly, then you have a storm in your heart. That can be both, being scared and being so torn apart. When you feel so much and you forget about everything else that is when your heart is a storm.
At the age of 16 you wrote a song about world peace. These global problems are not really obvious in your songs at the moment, do they still play a role?
Aurora Aksnes: Yes, absolutely. There are songs like “Through The Eyes Of A Child” and “Black Water Lilies” but it is very hidden. I cannot read the news, it makes me really upset because there is always something sad. Everywhere on your phone you read about so many sad things. Most people can just scroll, when they see 100 people got killed, they move on, but I cannot do that. It affects me a lot. All these things make me angry. Then I have the biggest need to write something, so I can feel a bit happier when I am done. They inspire me a lot. I think it is important to write about these problems that we try to forget that they are real. We cannot think about the world’s problems every day but we should think about them much more because we can help. I write about things so we can be reminded of them. These problems exist and we cannot think that it is not our problem because we are all together in this world and we should all stand up for each other. It should affect us if anyone is suffering.
Why do you make so many videos of live performances?
Aurora Aksnes: I have not thought about it. I definitely like myself more live than on the album because the most important thing for me is the emotion and the energy. You cannot show the emotion on a record in the same way as live. It is too perfect. Live shows are so more real, they are alive. I try to put the same energy in the album, that is my biggest goal for the second album. I do not know how but I might try to record the vocals in front of live audience.
