INTERVIEW: UNDER AURORA’S SKIN
By TEASER Magazine • October 28, 2015
[ed: unavailable image here]
Was war dein außergewöhnlichster „Fan-Moment“?
TEASER Magazine: Offensichtlich inspirierst du viele deiner Fans – wer inspiriert dich?
Zwei deiner Songs, „Running with the wolves“ und „Runaway“ basieren darauf.

INTERVIEW: UNDER AURORA'S SKIN
By TEASER Magazine • October 28, 2015
Like an emerging storm, magical, extraordinary, dark, but equally full of light - that's how you could describe the music of the 19-year-old AURORA and also herself. The Norwegian has been the new (northern) light in the German music sky since her single "Running with the wolves" and spoke to us about home, inspiration, her fans and magic.
TEASER Magazine: You're just 19 years old and have already released 5 singles. When did you decide to make music and share your music? Was that a conscious decision or did it just happen?
AURORA: It was a mix of both. I've been writing songs since I was nine and have always loved to make music. And then it just happened: a friend of mine published one of my songs, which then brought me to the attention of my current management. We had a few meetings together and then we decided to work together. But even then I wasn't completely sure if I wanted to be an artist - I actually just wanted to write songs. But then, when I was 16, I decided to do it because my mother thought that my songs could potentially help other people out there when they were going through a hard time. She also said it was selfish not to try - so I decided to do it. And now... now I'm here. It just happened - and I don't even know how exactly it happened.
TEASER Magazine: As you mentioned, you've been making music since you were nine, that's also when you started writing your song "Lucky" - how does it feel to perform it eight years later, is it strange ?
AURORA: Yes, it's very strange! I wrote the chorus when I was nine years old and then the verses a few years ago. It's strange how a song I wrote ten years ago still means something and I still feel connected to it. It's strange, but it means a lot more to me now than it did back then. Because when I was nine I knew what I was writing about and what I wanted to express with the song, but now I can identify with it much more. Mainly because I have experienced a lot since then, much more of course than back then. The song now has a new meaning for me.
[ed: unavailable image here]
TEASER Magazine: Something that also means a lot to you is your fans, especially on Facebook you comment and answer a lot of posts. What was your most extraordinary "fan moment"?
AURORA: I love all my fans. It's very strange to be called a queen and things like that. It's strange but I know it only means good things and it makes me happy too. It's really weird but I kind of like it too, so I try to have as much contact with my fans as possible and reply to them as often as possible. I want to break through that wall and just be friends with them. I'm a normal girl, except that making music is my hobby and profession - but that's the only difference. It's important to keep this in mind, especially for me. But I love my fans and sometimes I get these emails that are so deep and tell about sad events. I don't know - I'm not that wise, I don't know more than others about certain things, but still they ask me for advice. But of course it's also very nice that they trust me so much, that people open up to me so much and ask me what they should do. I then usually tell them about my own experiences and what I would do and, most importantly, that it's okay to be sad. Because like everything, this too shall pass. I like that I can talk to my fans on an emotional level and that they feel like they can talk to me.
TEASER Magazine: You obviously inspire a lot of your fans – who inspires you?
AURORA: My mother, my family and nature – "Mother Earth". And Björk, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. Oh, and actually my manager, he's such a nice person.
TEASER Magazine: This is also reflected in your songs and videos; nature always plays a big role. Also, it seems like you like the idea of running away. Two of your songs, "Running with the wolves" and "Runaway" are based on it. What exactly is it about, is it about escaping something?
AURORA: No, I don't want to escape or run away from anything. If I had that feeling, I would just read a fantasy book and that would be enough. I just believe that running is the most beautiful and free thing you can do. It's actually more about freedom. Running is the closest thing to flying and it's so fast. You can hardly see where you're stepping, you just run and it's beautiful, free and pure - I like that a lot. There is something magical about running.
TEASER Magazine: Magic seems to be a big topic for you. On Facebook you say we are all "Warriors of light". You seem like a very spiritual person - do you believe in astrology or something supernatural?
AURORA: I don't know much about zodiac signs and I can't say which constellation is which. I don't know much about these things, but I believe in positive forces and energy. If you are nice and friendly, then you are happy. And then of course others will be nice to you too. It's simple: If you smile, then I will smile too. I just want to inspire all my fans to be nice and kind, because maybe in a few years I'll be a role model for a lot of young people. I want to inspire people to be kind to each other.
TEASER Magazine: Something that is also very inspiring is your playlist "Under my skin" on Spotify – a great name. You say you need these songs when you're far from home. So you are very connected to your homeland and Norway and these songs remind you of being there?
AURORA: Yes, that's exactly what they do! You know, there are so many songs that you hear and like but only a few of them manage to get under your skin. They stay with you and remind you of things. About your home, a person, a specific event and good memories. And that's mainly what the songs on the playlist trigger for me. They are songs that remind me of beautiful things - that is also a feeling of home. It's good to have songs like that.
TEASER Magazine: Norway is your homeland, your home. What can you tell us specifically about the music scene in Norway?
AURORA: First of all, there are many, many good musicians and artists in Norway. It's a very nice environment between us, we're all good friends and know each other. Especially us who are just starting out. We know each other and that's very nice. I was a big fan of one of them before he became a member of my band. O.Martin is his name and he is so great! His album is unique and now he's suddenly playing in my band. It's really fun and we spend so much time together. And there’s another great artist – DePresno. He is also a good friend of mine and is my age. He just released his first single and people are liking it. He's very cool - hipper than me and just right for the current times.
TEASER Magazine: If you don't consider yourself hip, how would you describe your own style and what does fashion mean to you?
AURORA: I think my style is very old-fashioned. I like to cover a lot of my skin and wear lots of layers. Sometimes I look like a tent. What I also really like are old-fashioned things like suspenders and big men's blazers. I also really enjoy wearing vintage coats. And things that have something magical about them, like the butterflies in my hair.

What I also really like are old-fashioned things like suspenders and big men's blazers. I also really enjoy wearing vintage coats. And things that have something magical about them, like the butterflies in my hair.

Me in Poland when it’s sunny. A bit nervous for today’s show. Wish me luck.

INTERVIEW: UNDER AURORA’S SKIN
