Won't tour like that again - Aurora on 2017, next album and her relation to Leonard Cohen
(Translated by onelittlewarrior )
Her 2016 touring left Aurora completely exhausted. Now she's deeply involved with her next album.
Tuesday night a star team of Norwegian artists gathered in Oslo Spektrum for the unofficial Leonard Cohen tribute "So Long". One of the artist on the stage was Aurora Aksnes.
- The producers wanted me to do "Famous Blue Raincoat". I agreed because I love that song, says Aurora, lying in her hotel room in Oslo, wearing her bath robe and with cucumber on her eyes as Bergensavisen calls her.
- Leonard Cohen has been around ever since I was born. His music is the reason I started this.
Blue London Raincoat
Doing cover versions is second nature to Aurora. Many remember her rendition of the Oasis song "Half The World Away" before Christmas in 2015, used in an ad for British retailer John Lewis.
"Famous Blue Raincoat" is on Cohen's sixth album "Songs of Love and Hate" that was released in 1971. Cohen has said himself that he bougth said blue jacket, a Burburry, in London in 1959. Tore Amos is just one of the artists to do a cover of the song.
- When I do covers it's important to me to know each and every sentence and word well enough for them to get a place in my heart. When I do concerts a lot of emotion is involved because my own songs take up so much of my heart. When I do a cover I need to work with it 100% to have it fill my heart. I've gone so deep into this now I don't know if I can do it without crying. It's very sad.
- Will you do it at your own concerts in the future?
- It's a good question. I haven't thought about it, to be honest. Maybe I should? Maybe I should do it on my own on the piano? That'd be nice. Yes, I think I'll play it, she says before exclaiming:
- Oh, no. I lost the one cucumber. I need to pick it up. Hold on a second.
A calmer 2017
Both before and after the release of her debut "All My Demons Greeting Me as a Friend" in March last year Aurora and her band toured extensively. Crisscrossing Europe and the US she clocked in at 210 concerts in 2016.
- I'll never tour like that again. It was very exhausting. It's extremely difficult to be at the top of your form each night. I also care about the audience and find it hard if someone's been to a concert on one of my bad days.
The touring year of 2017 will be a lot calmer. She'll be playing the last day of Bergenfest this summer, do a festival gig in Switzerland, one in Slovakia and another eight in Norway up until September. Now it's the follow-up to "All My Demons Greeting Me as a Friend" that she devotes all her creativity and strength.
- I spend all my time on my new album. I've done a lot of work and to be honest I have more than enough tracks to make a record, but the problem is we need to look for a few singles. I don't really do radio friendly songs, so we have to have a look at what we've got and how to work with that, she says.
