Aurora promises to sing songs from her upcoming album on Saturday.
Soon turning 21, Aurora Aksnes picks the spot herself for her chat with BA. Bergen botanical garden is just magnificent now towards the middle of June. And Aurora blends in just perfectly.
- It's good to feel I'm not fed up being photographed. That's nice, says Aurora.
She's just the way she should be, her own and fully natural self.
Besides she's been resting for quite some time now. Some 18 months of touring took its toll and almost killed her itch to write songs.
- Just now I'm really good. The last few weeks have been so nice. I'm very happy and ready to be on stage again. And I've also bought my own flat, she radiates.
Collects sounds - and people
The new city girl is writing songs for her new album.
- I go around and collect sounds and people to be part of the new album. I found a man who had a choir. I met him in a cafe in England. Pure coincidence, really. We started talking and I showed him an insect I'd found in London. He told me he too liked bugs and other, well, creepy things before he told me he was comissioned to make the score for a horror movie. He's got 60 men in his choir. I want them on my next album, and with luck, at a festival, Aurora says.
She'd rather collect genuine sounds and real people for the next album.
- It's so much better than finding the sounds on a computer, she says honestly.
Loves folk music
She has no intension to write off the first album but Aurora has learnt a thing or two the last few years, something she wants to incorporate on her sophomore album.
- I love folk music. I want to incorporate it on the next album, especially the darker side of Norwegian folk music. I might do a Norwegian song on the next album. I've never done that before, says Aurora.
She says she wants to bring a piece of Norway when she travels the world.
- I really want to write a Norwegian song inspired by folk music, the artist says.
That the girl from Os has benefited from staying away from the spotlight isn't difficult to see.
- Will the Bergenfest audience get to experience any of your new material?
- Perhaps, Aurora smiles.
- We'll rehearse the new songs today for the concert, says the girl from Os.
A lot of kindness in town
- What does Bergenfest mean to you?
- It was such a big deal the first time I sang there two years ago. God, it's so strange I've been an artist for that long, Aurora interjects before going on:
- It's so incredibly nice to play in Bergen. I feel such a sense of goodness from the audience. I get the same feeling from the others at the festival as well. Everyone's so nice around me, also the people who work to keep the festival going, she says.
She would love to go to some of the other concerts but doesn't know if she'll have the time.
- I have to find out how to go about it, wear a hat and a bit of extra clothes.
- Do people leave you alone?
- Not really, no. Some times it's really fun that people come up to me to talk, but it's not always like that. It's not always funny. But I'm learning to cope. I mean, every time people come up to me they say nice things to me.
