- My most important mission is to bring people together and create a sense of togetherness and friendship. So that those who feel lonely can become part of something bigger, says Aurora.
- Oh, no. I just slipped on a snail. Oh well, I'm fine, but ohhh. I don't know about the snail!
The bug collector
Aurora, who sheds her surname Aksnes as an artist, has just told us that she's moved into a new flat in Bergen, that she's on her way to the studio - actually just a close walk away - and that the world really is a quite marvelous and beautiful place.
But trampling on snails is really not a habit of Aurora's. Aurora is known as passionate about bugs and small animals.
- I have a collection of framed and glassed bugs. I don't know if I will be able to fit it all in my new flat, she tells us.
- It's been like that ever since junior school. While the others were afraid of worms and spiders, finding them creepy, I just had love for small bugs. I guess I felt they needed some extra care. Once I tried to build the worms a fun fair. It wasn't very successful.
Her own boss
Aurora giggles. When you read this she's just turned 21. And been a singer and songwriter for five years. She was signed at the young age of 16 without having released a single song. She's played at the Nobel concert, had praise lavished on her by super star Katy Perry, been in the top ten of rising stars in Rolling Stone and been a guest at Jimmy Fallon.
- I quit school and went to the USA. It just happened so fast, Aurora says, telling us she doesn't miss an "ordinary" life.
- I'm lucky. Because I have my days when I just cant face the world. When I just can't leave the room. Then it's nice to be your own boss.
- You've had enormous success. How do you keep yourself grounded?
- You know, I have heavy shoes to prevent me from flying. And then I'm from the countryside. I've just got so much soil in my system, says Aurora, hailing from Os outside Bergen and having chosen to settle in the capital of Western Norway because she prefers to stay close to her home.
This summer however she'll tour in Norway and the world from Sør-Varanger up north to Sao Paulo in Brazil in the south.
- My manager tells me my fan page in Brazil has 100,000 followers. That's why we give these concerts as a gift. One of them is sold out, apparently.
- It it weird to know that thousands of people in Brazil listen to your music?
- Yes! It's so strange. And so nice. My fans are so varied, from old sailors at 82 to young people, that's the most beautiful thing.
Love for the people
For her first album, All My Demons Greeting Me as a Friend, released in 2016, she won a Norwegian Grammy for best solo artist as well as for best video with "I went too far".
- You say you're on your way to the studio. When can we expect new material from you?
- If it was up to me I'd release an EP in May!, says Aurora who writes songs all the time.
- I have difficulties making up my mind. I want to make singles that can spread worldwide. There's a certain pressure involved. But I've become better at expressing what I want, says Aurora who this time around is working with several other song writers in terms of lyrics and producing.
- I like writing songs on my own, but also with others. I don't have to own everything, I suppose.
- Are you stressed?
- My next output needs to be fantastic or terrible. Not just OK. But the worst and kindest person to please is Aurora Aksnes herself.
She finds it hard to understand exactly what people like about her music.
- It's the same as good food made with love. I put as much emotion and love into my music that I possibly can. And I believe people notice that, Aurora says adding:
- A song is like a speech that hits your heart first. And music is something we've managed to invent, yet it needs to be invented continuously. Some people have that ability. My biggest mission is to bring people together, to create a sense of togetherness and friendship. So that those who feel lonely can become part of something bigger. I want to give so much back to people, says Aurora.
Yellow poncho and red backpack
Those who follow Aurora in social media will notice soon enough that she's interested in several forms of art - like pictoral art, and that she's not mainstream in her clothes deparment.
- I've always had an urge to dress differently. The wilder, unreal and far out, the more I can relax as a human being. Being different just makes me happy, Aurora tells us.
- Today I'm wearing and Indian bath robe with dragons, yellow poncho, heavy shoes and a small red backpack. If you want to I can send you a picture?
- I'd love to! And in return I'll send you a picture of the Romsdal museum.
- Oh, yes! I've never been in Molde before. It's about time. I'm really looking forward to it. Molde Jazz is such a nice festival. But I may start to cry. I often do in beautiful surroundings.
Two minutes later an sms comes along:
"Ohh. What a beautiful lady. And what a place. Just. Lovely"
Aurora will play at the Romsdal museum Wednesday 19 July at 17.00
