She's quite the bundle of energy, the petite girl who is sitting just opposite me. Eager. Can we do this in Norwegian? I nod and claim that I understand the language. But I'm unprepared for this stream of words in that West-Norwegian dialect that is pouring from the singer who in no time at all has experienced such massive success. Who only a month ago released her debut album with the intriguing title All My Demons Greeing Me As A Friend. A title that is an echo of Aurora, whose name, albeit given to her by her parents, may refer to both a Roman goddess and northern lights. Both of them fittingly so.
Petite and fragile, she sits down on the chair, folding her feet into a comfortable position. Her face is lovely and her hair has a singular braid, giving her quite a different appearance compared to the very beautiful ones in her press photos. And then Aurora starts to talk about her spiritual life.
- The spiritual side of life means a lot to me. I meditate for hours every day. I believe this comes from my background that is with me all the time. I was born close to nature and I wouldn't be the same without it, she says convincingly. She exudes a spontaneity reminiscent of MØ when she broke through a few years back, a comparison that goes down well with Aurora.
- I really like MØ, but basically what has inspired me are songs from decades back, says Aurora, who has cited Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan as her main inspirations earlier. When I say that I can't hear those influences in her music she says it's more about her lyrics and her melancholic universe that appeal to a mediative Scandinavian like her. I mention Joni Mitchell and Aurora's enthusiasm hits me like a wave.
- Yes, I'm SO into her right now!
Planning new record
The 19 year old girl from Os in Hordaland has experienced a lot. Both her parents used to play and the little girl, having two older sisters, found an electric piano in the basement. In the beginning it was just for fun but at the age of 10 she started to make songs inspired by classical music. Aurora is from the part of Norway where traditional music, especially on violin, is in high regard, and the classical composer Edvard Grieg is the pride of the region, indeed of Norway as a whole.
At the age of 12 Aurora wrote her first serious effort, Runaway, that fittingly opens the debut LP that was released in May [sic!]. But it was only at 17 that she got her break through a radio talent web site, Urørt, and Petroleum Records, with Thomas Dybdahl and Kaizers Orchestra on its roster, offered her a contract that eventually took her to Decca Records in the UK, jokingly referred to by the Norwegians as "the label that turned The Beatles down".
It has really paid off. Runaway received more than a million streams on Spotify in the UK alone within 6 weeks of its release, and it was included on the 2015 EP Running With The Wolves, making Katy Perry tweet about her. Her music has been specially mentioned by the BBC and for newspapers like The Independent she's an artist to watch. The UK has been specifically singled out: retailer John Lewis had her sing Oasis' Half The World Away for their Christmas commercial, but in the States too things are taking off with Aurora appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Upcoming Roskilde artist Aurora is just calm:
- I find it fantastic to be playing Roskilde. That's a dream come true for everyone in Scandinavia. But I'm equally excited about going home to start working on my next record. It's in my head and it comes to me when I meditate. I'll definitely find inspiration in Norwegian folk music. I'm very happy about my background. Travelling the world won't change that, says Aurora.
