Aurora’s studio is insulated with natural wood fiber

When Aurora and her father wanted to build a new recording studio, the vision was that the studio should be as natural as possible. It was important to Aurora that they should use wood materials as much as possible, so that she could feel close to nature when she makes music. The solution was to build a studio with Hunton materials.

Aurora Aksnes, better known as the artist Aurora, has in a few years become one of Norway’s great artist-jewels with global recognition. The 25-year-old girl from Os outside of Bergen has a unique and captivating, beautiful voice that has already secured her several prestigious awards.

Aurora is both a vocalist and a songwriter, and creates music that is sensitive, beautiful and enchanting. Which was quickly discovered outside of Norway’s borders. In 2015, she was chosen to sing Oasis’ “Half the World Away” for a Christmas commercial for the British department store chain John Lewis. The advertisement was released on YouTube, and during the first day it was seen by 7 million people.

After that, she attracted attention from all over the world, including the management of Disney, which ended with a vocal performance in Frozen 2, a performance at the Oscar ceremony in 2020 and a guest appearance at Good Morning, America, to name a few. Before the pandemic, Aurora toured the world, but always came home to her parents’ house at Os. And the forest behind it.

– My relationship with nature and the environment has meant a lot to me all my life. As a child, the forest was a place I could relax and feel like myself again after a stressful day at school. The forest became the place where I got focus and peace, Aurora says.

The house of her parents, Jan Øystein and May Britt, is idyllically located in Os surrounded by beautiful nature, with a view straight out to sea at the front and the forest behind. Aurora has grown up surrounded by beautiful nature on all sides.

– Some people need to go out to sea or on a mountain top to get perspective on how big and small our problems really are. But for me, it has always been the forest that is my refuge. I love the trees and the smell of the forest, it makes me relax, Aurora says.

The forest has always meant a lot to Aurora and characterizes a lot of the music and visuals she creates. After becoming a globally recognized artist with a hectic schedule, it has become even more important for her to get out into the woods.

– It reminds me of who I am and why I make music. Not least, it makes me more aware of how much responsibility we have to take care of nature in Norway and the rest of the world.

Nature and music in harmony

The more music Aurora made, the more important it became to find the perfect studio. She quickly found out that she had to make her own. She collaborated closely with her father Jan Øystein, and they began to draw and plan a studio to be built in the garden of her childhood home in Os.

– Dad is a very skilled hobby architect, so he made sketches and got this studio built in collaboration with good local craftsmen, she says. – Our vision was to create a studio that gave the feeling of being one with nature, so sustainable and natural that the whole feeling inside the studio was just clean, in harmony with, and with respect for, nature, she says.

Jan Øystein knew about Hunton’s products and knew that they are mainly based on short-distance spruce chips from Norwegian, PEFC-certified forests, a natural and renewable raw material that stores carbon throughout the product’s lifetime. This was very important for Aurora, and Hunton was therefore also her choice of material.

– When I was little, I was so sad when I saw the trees being felled to become a house, or for a new road or parking lot. I mourned all the trees that were felled. With Hunton’s products, I know that for every tree that is felled, the whole tree has a purpose and a new life cycle, Aurora says.

At the sawmill, the largest part of the log becomes lumber, while the rest becomes wood chips, sawdust and planer shavings. In Hunton’s factory in Gjøvik, the chips are defibrated into wood fiber, which in turn becomes wood fiber insulation. Hunton thus contributes to the utilization of the entire log.

All good things come in t(h)rees

– For me and for many other artists, there is nothing more important than the space you are in when you create what you create. The most important thing for me when we made the studio was that it should have a good atmosphere. That I felt close to nature when I was there.

Dad Jan Øystein certainly succeeds in bringing nature in. The studio was built with large floor-to-ceiling windows with a view out over the treetops and out to sea. The soundproof vocal room at the back also has large windows so that Aurora can always be inspired by looking out over the sea, the forest and nature.

– When you sing in the woods, it’s like a duet between you and everything that is out there. The music I get in my head from standing in the woods is very different from what I get when I stand and look out at the sea. Runaway was written while I was looking out over the sea, while quite a few of my other songs I have written or started writing in the woods, she says.

Aurora’s love of trees is widely known and so are pictures of her hugging them. Nature is part of her inspiration when she produces music.

– In addition to the studio and all the furniture, most of the instruments I have are made of wood: a piano, a guitar, a small violin, a small ukulele and several small kalimbas. Wood and music belong together. Wood carries music. Both music and wood is alive. All good things are t(h)ree, Aurora states.

The good qualities of nature

When Aurora makes music, she can work up to 16 hours straight every day because she becomes so engrossed in what she does that it is difficult to leave the room. She noticed a big difference in other studios where there was not enough light or good enough air, which quickly was detrimental for her head and body. She got tired faster, got headaches and needed more breaks. That was why a separate studio was needed.

– In my own studio, I feel that I can work all day because the air feels so clean and good. Hunton’s wood fiber insulation regulates the temperature in the room both winter and summer, and it feels a bit as if the room has become a separate living creature. Like being one with nature, she says.

Aurora likes the idea that all parts of the room she creates music in, right down to what is in the walls, are clean and natural, and feels that the music gets better as a result.

– I constantly notice that I need more contact with nature to be able to make music – more than I was aware of. There is no place I am happier than in my studio. That is why I am very grateful that there are people like those who work in Hunton who have the same vision as me, to take care of nature and use it in the best possible way, she concludes.

About Aurora’s sound studio

The studio is around 30 sqm and was built with a sloping ceiling and asymmetrical shape narrower at the rear edge (funnel shape) which is important to get the best sound. The less square the room is, the better it is for the sound. One of the short walls is made of glass from ceiling to floor to get the most out of the view of the treetops and the sea into the room. Inmost in the room there is a soundproof vocal room, also with a large window and a glass door so that it lets in light and nature.

Hunton Nativo® Wood Fiber Insulation Boards were used to insulate the entire sound studio, both walls and ceilings. Hunton Intello Plus was used as a steam brake, and Fermacell® Fiber Plaster was used on the walls.

Nativo Wood Fiber Insulation and Fermacell Fiber Plaster both have good sound-insulating properties, EPD environmental documentation and SINTEF technical approval.
