Artist and singer Aurora (20), having mesmerised her Norwegian audience and also her international one, spent her early childhood years in Høle.
Aurora Aksnes, artistic name Aurora, was born at Stavanger University Hospital in 1996. After her birth she came home to the rest of her family in Høle.
Who knew at the time that the little baby several years later would stand on increasingly bigger stages receiving praise from audience and media for her music and performance as a rare musical talent?
Not many people know that her family lived in Høle for 15 years and that Aurora lived there the first three years of her life. It was here that Aurora performed her first little ditties.
Full of imagination
Aurora would love the sea, sailing, spending time on islets and rocks where she would collect little treasures from the seaside. She had the forest right behind her house, and she basically lived in it. Aurora loved dressing up with clothes from old chests and hats from the attic. She had a lively imagination, liked making plays, making a home-made stage with red velvet curtains and home-made puppets.
Aurora can remember several things from her time in the municipality of Sandnes.
- What do you remember from Høle?
- I can remember the blue walls in the kitchen, a birthday with cream cake with strawberries. A swing and a garden with sweets on the branches of the trees! Apart from that I can't remember very much, Aurora tells Sandnesposten.
Magic from Høle
- Do you think that your time there has influenced you in any way in your music? The surroundings or anything else?
- I lived there for only three years, but I think you take in a lot of your surroundings when you're a child. I do believe I've brought some of that magic along on my journey around the world.
- Have you visited Høle after you moved?
- Yes! We've been there a couple of times. Had a look at our old house. Visited old friends and neighbours. It's been very nice each time.
- What inspires you the most in your music?
- Nature. People, the good and the evil in us. How we react and cope with things. This I find very inspiring. Apart from that I love tranquility. Silence inspires me more than anything else.
In love with Høle
Aurora's parents, May Britt and Jan Øystein Aksnes, moved to Høle with their children after their studies in Stavanger. They fell in love with Høle and still have close friends there.
- After our studies in Stavanger we wanted to live in the countryside, somewhere safe for our children to grow up. Then we found idyllic Høle, and instantly fell in love with the fjord, the forest and the surrounding mountains, the little path to kindergarden and school that was void of any traffic, mother and father Aksnes say.
They stayed in Høle until Aurora was three. Then they moved further north, to Os.
- Aurora used to sing a lot, from when she was two or three. Her favourite was long songs with many verses, the parents tell Sandnesposten.
- Good neighbours
- The village of Høle reminded us of Hardanger where we are from. The strongest memories are of the neighbours who received us very warmly. The neighbours in Høle are still the best neighbours. Other than that we remember Høle for all the nice people we got to know, especially in connection with our time in choir and band.
- Coming back to Høle used to be a very wistful experience; we left so many good things. It got better after a few years.
- Do you think your time in Høle has influenced the music Aurora makes?
- It's difficult to say, but there's no doubt the early years are the most important ones in a person's life, they say.
Now their daughter is headlining festivals in Norway, selling out concerts, receiving a Grammy for best new artist in 2015. She has also performed at the Jimmy Fallon talk show in the US.
Earlier this year she was listed as one of 10 artist to watch by music magazine Rolling Stone. She has also had a sold-out tour in the US. In the near future Aurora will do several concerts in Europe. It's not unlikely that the surroundings of Høle have influenced her music when she says that nature and silence is very important to her.
